Built-In Beauty

What is a built-in exactly? It’s something that is built into your home. Popular items are bookshelves, entertainment areas, and benches, but it can extend to desks, credenzas, closets, or large seating areas. Many times homes are designed with built-ins, other times there are none at all, and sometimes you will have houses with little niches in rooms that are just begging for something permanent in there. They work well in any style of home from modern to traditional. Built-in details like the wood work, finish, and hardware should mimic the home it is in. They are wonderful in so many different ways; adding character, color, and pattern to an otherwise empty spot, and they are functional! It’s a timeless look and when made with purpose, they can certainly add value to the house.

Built-Ins can be a splurge. With the cost of building materials and labor it will add up, but there are also ways to accomplish the look for less. I see a lot of brilliant IKEA hacks using the BILLY system they have. Similarly, other less expensive materials can make the built-in you want for a smaller budget.

You can have some fun with built-ins too. I’m seeing a lot of bold colors like blues, greens, and reds being used. I’m also a really big fan of wallpapering the back of a built-in shelf to add a little pattern and texture. The addition of funky hardware or lighting, make this truly yours.  When it comes to built-in seating, select a fabric that speaks to the room and brings everything together. These are such great ways to add a little personality into the space and really personalize the look. Especially with the less expensive materials from IKEA, this is a nice detail that can make it appear more custom with quality.

Next time you are contemplating a way to fill a niche in your home or wondering what can give your space that finished look, implement a built-in to serve the room with function and beauty.  Have a Happy Valentine’s!
