Mudroom Essentials

I’m in need of a major mudroom refresh. This entire winter I’ve been constantly looking at the kids snow pants piled high and dirty shoes being thrown every which way. I just finished up a mudroom design and it has me inspired to work on my own space. The ultimate goal is for everything to find a home; your coats, shoes, and cold weather accessories. The materials used need to be easy to maintain and clean from constant use and flow of outdoor elements.

Whether you have a small space or large, there are a few essentials to an entry or mudroom. A place to sit, a place for shoes, and a place for coats and accessories like scarves, gloves, and hats. Space planning the room, by having a spot to hide shoes and sit down as the first things when you enter help with tracking in dirt. Lastly, the coats and storage for accessories. Depending on what your budget is, your mudroom can be designed a few different ways.

Built-ins: What a gorgeous look to have built-in cabinets. Floor to ceiling, these cabinets are very ideal to hold everything you could possibly want and hide it away. You can customize built-ins to your hearts content for a price though! If you are handy enough you can DIY this for less. Custom cabinet built-ins enhance homes and create the ultimate storage!

Stand alone furniture: This is such a nice substitute for built-ins. When budgets are tighter, you can buy a beautiful hall stand with a bench and hooks or a storage chest for shoes and accessories for much less. Having different pieces of furniture in this room will also give a more eclectic and collected look. It’s a great opportunity to add some character.

Accessories that make mud rooms functional are baskets for shoes and accessories and hooks for your coats. Catchall baskets or trays are prefect for throwing your keys or mail into. Mirrors are essential for taking that last look before you go. Don’t forget some more personalization with art work and wall decor. Lastly, ground your room with a rug. The use of an indoor/outdoor material in here like polypropylene will come in handy. I also adore a vintage oriental rug. These thin rugs will last forever, wear well, and give a beautiful timeless look to your mudroom.

Have fun with this room! Usually our mu room or entries are on the small side compared to the rest of our home so this is an excellent opportunity to have a little fun. Paint the walls a color or hang wallpaper for some pattern and texture! Take that leap.

Spring is almost here and I am determined to get my mudroom in order before this fall. Let’s make that mud room functional, but also welcoming to walk into. Who’s with me?
